What should you do with your cat when you go on vacation?

Cats are solitary animals, but that does not mean they enjoy being left alone for several days. Are you going on vacation and don’t know what to do with Fluffy? Keep reading, and you can head off with your mind at ease!

A weekend getaway?

As a general rule, you can leave your cat at home for 2-3 days. However, don’t leave your cat any longer than that! If you are going away for the weekend, plan ahead:

• Put out a few bowls of fresh water in case your cat knocks one over. Another option might be to buy a drinking fountain that holds a lot of water and recirculates it so there is no stagnant water (watch a video about this type of drinking bowl here).
• Consider putting out a few bowls of kibble. If you travel often, think about a programmable kibble dispenser.
• Two clean litterboxes.

You are going away for more than 3 days… Have somebody take care of your cat!

In addition to water and food, indoor cats need cuddles and entertainment! Being home alone with nothing to do is not healthy for body or mind...

So if you are planning longer vacations, we recommend having a friend or family member look after your cat. That person will be able to take care of her and keep her company while you are away. If you have the option, it is preferable for your cat-sitter to stay at your place so your cat does not change environments.

My cat goes outside often; what should I do?

A cat who spends a lot of her day outside needs to be able to come home to sleep or eat during your absence. So, you have 2 options:

• Ask the person taking care of your cat to let her out as often as possible.
• Install a cat door so your cat can come in and out when she wants. Electronic cat doors, which recognize your cat’s microchip, are preferable. Although it is more expensive, the solution is also safest! It prevents other cats or wild animals (raccoons or skunks…) from entering your home!
